The rise was driven by drugmaker Merck, which saw a 4.96% increase after the USFDA approved its treatment for a rare lung condition in adults. Here's a breakdown of the numbers: the Dow Jones Industrial Average went up by 477.75 points, or 1.22%, to 39,760.08. The S&P 500 climbed by 44.91 points, or 0.86%, reaching 5,248.49, setting a new record. The Nasdaq Composite also saw gains, rising by 83.82 points, or 0.51%, to 16,399.52.
On Thursday, Asian markets showed a downward trend, with Japan's Nikkei 225 down by 0.98% and the Topix dropping 1.08%. South Korea's Kospi also fell by 0.19%. Australian stocks, on the other hand, reached a record high. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index futures indicated a lower start. In China, stocks were in negative territory, mainly due to significant selling by foreign investors. This selling pressure was fueled by ongoing concerns about the outlook for the world's second-largest economy. The blue-chip CSI300 index hit a one-month low early in the trading session, while the Shanghai Composite index struggled to stay above the psychologically important 3000-point mark, falling by 0.1%.
Sensex Update at 11 AM: The Sensex rose by 745.93 points or 1.02 percent, reaching 73,742.24, while the Nifty increased by 222.50 points or 1.01 percent, standing at 22,346.20. Among stocks, 2109 advanced, 1056 declined, and 100 remained unchanged.
