Shaking Ground: New Jersey's Strongest Earthquake in 240 Years Triggers 11 Aftershocks

New Jersey's Strongest Earthquake in 240 Years Triggers 11 Aftershocks

After a big earthquake in New York City, there were 11 smaller earthquakes that shook the area. The first quake, which was a 4.8 magnitude, surprised people because earthquakes don't usually happen there.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) says a big earthquake, measuring 4.8 on the scale, hit New Jersey. This is the third-largest earthquake in the last fifty years and the biggest in New Jersey for over 240 years.

The earthquake happened just after 10:20 am local time. It was quite deep, about 4.7 kilometers below the surface.

After the first earthquake, there were smaller ones called aftershocks. At around 11:20 am, there was a 2.0 aftershock near Bedminster, New Jersey. Then, at about 12:30 pm, there was another aftershock measuring 1.8. After that, at 1:14 pm, there was a 2.0 aftershock, and just before 3 pm, another one measuring 2.0. These aftershocks happened after the main earthquake.

Thankfully, there wasn't much damage reported, but engineers were checking roads and bridges to be sure they were safe.

People from Baltimore to Boston felt the shaking, and some even went outside to see what was happening.

A video shared by EarthCam shows the moment the big 4.8 earthquake hit New Jersey and the surrounding areas.
