Eid-ul-Fitr 2024 Moon Sighting Live

Eid al-Fitr 2024 may happen on April 10 or 11 in India. But it all relies on seeing the Shawwal crescent moon. Eid al-Fitr, also known as Ramadan Eid, signals the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.

Some experts think the moon sighting could be affected by a total solar eclipse. There are reports suggesting that the crescent moon might not be visible right after the eclipse, possibly pushing the moon sighting to April 9, 2024. The festival will take place a day after the crescent moon is spotted.

What are the traditions and customs of Eid al-Fitr?

In Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim-majority country, many people travel back to their hometowns to celebrate Eid with family and friends. This tradition, known as 'mudik,' is a significant part of the holiday. This year, an estimated 193.6 million travelers are expected to journey across the vast archipelago for Eid.

During the past two years, Indonesians crowded into trains, ferries, buses, and motorcycles as they left major cities, facing heavy traffic, to return to their villages for the holiday. Flights were fully booked, and relatives carrying gifts waited in long lines at bus and train stations. Before Eid, popular markets bustle with shoppers purchasing clothes, shoes, cookies, and sweets.

When is Eid-ul-Fitr 2024 Celebrated in India?

Eid al-Fitr in India this year will be decided by spotting the Shawwal moon. If the crescent moon appears on the evening of April 9th, 2024, celebrations will start on April 10th. But if the moon isn't seen, Eid will be on April 11th.

The date of Eid al-Fitr depends on the lunar calendar, which follows the cycle of the moon. That's why the festival happens about 10-11 days earlier each year compared to the Gregorian calendar.
