Sunil Chhetri, the captain of the Indian men's football team, shared on Thursday that he will play his final match for the national team during the FIFA World Cup qualifier against Kuwait on June 6.
The 39-year-old striker revealed his retirement from international football through a video posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday.

Chhetri will make his 151st and last appearance for India at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on June 6.

"In the past 19 years, I've experienced a mix of responsibility, stress, and great happiness," said the Bengaluru FC striker in the video.

Chhetri acknowledged the importance of the qualifier against Kuwait in the video but mentioned that he didn't feel too much pressure, knowing it would be his final game for India.

Every time I train with the national team, I just want to have fun. The game against Kuwait is important, we really need to win to go to the next round. It’s a big deal for us."

"But strangely, I don’t feel the pressure because these 15-20 days with the national team and the match against Kuwait is the last," the striker said.

Chhetri started playing for India in 2007 against Cambodia in the Nehru Cup. He scored two goals in a 6-0 win in the first game of the tournament. He became India's captain in 2010 and led the team to victories in the 2012 Nehru Cup and four SAFF Championships in 2011, 2015, 2021, and 2023.

The striker has scored 94 goals in 150 appearances for India, ranking fourth in the list of most international goals, behind only Lionel Messi (106 goals), Ali Daei (108 goals), and Cristiano Ronaldo (128 goals).
