Disease X: Is it the Next Pandemic Threat? Exploring the Possibility | Deadlier than COVID19 |

Health groups and governments everywhere are getting ready for the next big sickness, but what about something we can't predict? That's where Disease X comes in.

Since 2018, a mysterious and often misunderstood hypothetical germ called Disease X has been a big focus for getting ready for global sickness outbreaks. Planning for a sickness we don't even know about yet could help us respond quicker and better to save lives by making vaccines, treatments, and tests faster.

In this Q&A, Amesh Adalja, MD, who works at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, explains what Disease X all is about, when and where the next big germ might pop up, and how planning for future sicknesses can help us stop them before they start causing trouble.

Disease X: Preparing for Future Pandemics - What You Need to Know!

Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld once said that there are things we know, things we know we don't know, and things we don't even know we don't know. Disease X falls into that last category, the unknown unknowns.

Disease X is a term used for a germ that could cause a pandemic but hasn't been identified yet. It's a way to get people thinking ahead about germs that could be really dangerous. By thinking about these unknown threats early, we can be better prepared and not just focus on past sicknesses like the flu.

There are lots of germs out there that could cause a pandemic, but we haven't seen them in people yet. They often come from certain groups of viruses that could easily spread and make people sick. Disease X lets us start planning ahead by studying these viruses and understanding how they might affect us. This way, we're not caught off guard when a new germ shows up.

Do we know when or where Disease X might appear?

It could happen anytime. Throughout history, our species has faced pandemics from infectious diseases. Disease X could start with a virus jumping into humans, causing symptoms like a common cold or pneumonia. This could happen anywhere, especially where people and animals interact a lot, like in Asia and Africa, or even in places you wouldn't expect.

Who's getting ready for a Disease X outbreak?

Lots of groups, like the World Health Organization (WHO), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and others around the world. Governments, businesses, and even hospitals are involved. They're not just preparing medical treatments, but also planning how society will respond.

Are we ready for Disease X?

We're better prepared than before, but we're not fully ready yet. We still have problems like hospital capacity and making enough masks. Also, not everyone is willing to get vaccines or treatments.

What did we learn from COVID-19 that could help with Disease X?

We've developed faster ways to make vaccines, like mRNA and adenovirus technologies. Programs like Operation Warp Speed encourage companies to help with vaccine development. Plus, home testing can help people know if they're infected and take steps to protect themselves.
