OpenAI CTO Mira Murati Introduces ChatGPT 4o: GPT-4 Capabilities Now Accessible to Free Users | Technology | Artificial Intelligence |

OpenAI hosted its Spring Updates event at its US office today. During the event, the company's chief technology officer, Mira Murati, announced a new flagship model called ChatGPT 4o. Murati explained that the new model will provide the advanced capabilities of ChatGPT 4 to free users. Currently, only paying subscribers, who spend around Rs 1,800 per month, have access to ChatGPT 4, while free users are limited to ChatGPT 3.5.

Murati announced that ChatGPT 4o delivers GPT-4-level intelligence but is "much faster." She described GPT 4o as "the future of interaction between humans and machines," highlighting its improvements in text, vision, and audio. ChatGPT 4o is twice as fast, 50% cheaper, and has five times the rate limits of GPT-4 Turbo.

The new model focuses on user-friendliness. Murati mentioned that GPT 4o will excel at understanding voice tones, eliminating background noise, and reducing lag in conversations. It will be able to reason across voice, text, and vision, making GPT-4's intelligence accessible to free users.

OpenAI's ChatGPT currently boasts over 100 million users. With ChatGPT 4o, users can access the GPT store and millions of GPTs, including custom versions, for free. Murati emphasized that this would allow GPT developers to reach a broader audience.

ChatGPT 4o users will be able to upload screenshots and documents (with both text and images) and have text conversations with the AI. Previously, only paid users could use images and documents, while free users could only chat with text. With ChatGPT 4o, users will also get access to Memory, allowing the AI to remember past conversations for a more seamless experience.

ChatGPT 4o users can use the Browse feature to search in real-time during conversations. Like ChatGPT 4, GPT 4o can read charts and figures to analyze data and provide answers and summaries.

Murati says GPT 4o is better and faster in 50 different languages, just like ChatGPT 4. Paid users will still have an advantage, with up to 5 times the capacity limit compared to free users.

Besides being available on ChatGPT, GPT 4o will also be available in APIs, allowing developers to integrate its capabilities into their own AI applications.

OpenAI GPT-4o: How to Access the Free, Faster, and Enhanced Version

OpenAI has made its latest GPT-4 model available through a $20 monthly subscription plan. While this might disappoint free ChatGPT users, it's a good reason to consider upgrading to ChatGPT Plus. If you're already on the paid plan, you can easily switch your account's GPT model from the default GPT-3.5 to GPT-4 whenever you want. This flexibility allows you to explore the capabilities of GPT-4.

For free users who want to access GPT-4, you'll need to subscribe to ChatGPT Plus. But how do you do that?

To upgrade your ChatGPT account to the premium ChatGPT Plus plan:

  • Go to ChatGPT.
  • At the bottom of the left sidebar in the chat interface, find and click on "Upgrade to Plus."
  • You'll see a comparison between the free plan and ChatGPT Plus. Click on the green "Upgrade Plan" button.
  • You'll be taken to a page to enter your credit card details and billing information. Fill in all the required details and complete the payment process.
  • Once your payment is confirmed, you'll have access to the OpenAI GPT-4 model alongside the older GPT-3.5 default and GPT-3.5 legacy models.
  • Choose the GPT-4 model from the drop-down menu on your ChatGPT chat interface, select the mode you want, and start using GPT-4 with ChatGPT.

You can identify if you're using the GPT-4 model by checking the color of the OpenAI logo before ChatGPT's responses. Responses from the GPT-3.5 model have a green-white logo, while responses from GPT-4 have a black-white logo.
