Prada Acknowledges Kolhapuri Inspiration After Backlash: A Step Toward Respectful Fashion

For years, Kolhapuri chappals—traditionally handcrafted leather sandals from Maharashtra—have been more than just footwear; they symbolize Indian heritage and are beloved for their unique design and comfort. At the Prada Men’s Spring/Summer 2026 Fashion Show during Milan Fashion Week, models strutted down the runway in sandals strikingly similar to Kolhapuri chappals. Out of 56 outfits showcased, at least seven featured these India-inspired sandals. However, what upset many was Prada’s lack of acknowledgment regarding the origins of the design. The show notes merely referred to them as “leather sandals,” failing to mention India, Kolhapur, or the rich tradition behind them. This oversight led to significant backlash, particularly from the artisan community in Maharashtra and the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, Industry, and Agriculture (MACCIA). Many saw this as another instance of cultural appropriation—using elements of a culture without giving proper credit. 

MACCIA Stands Up for Artisans

In a thoughtful letter, MACCIA President Lalit Gandhi reminded Prada that Kolhapuri chappals have held Geographical Indication (GI) status in India since 2019, signifying official recognition as a traditional product of the Kolhapur region. Gandhi expressed, “Kolhapuri chappals represent centuries-old craftsmanship rooted in the cultural fabric of Maharashtra. These products are not only symbolic of regional identity but also support the livelihoods of thousands of artisans and families.” While MACCIA welcomed global fashion houses exploring diverse cultures, they stressed the importance of crediting and collaborating with local craftsmen. Gandhi urged Prada to go beyond mere acknowledgment of inspiration by seeking collaborations with artisan communities, offering fair compensation, and supporting ethical fashion practices that honor traditional knowledge. **Prada’s Response: Acknowledgment and Openness** After facing backlash, Prada issued a formal statement to MACCIA, recognizing that their designs drew inspiration from Indian footwear. A Prada spokesperson noted, “We acknowledge that the sandals featured in the recent Prada Men’s 2026 Fashion Show are inspired by traditional Indian handcrafted footwear with a centuries-old heritage. We deeply recognize the cultural significance of such craftsmanship.” Prada further clarified that the designs are still in the early stages and have not yet been finalized for production. Lorenzo Bertelli, Prada’s Group Head for Corporate Social Responsibility, added, “Prada strives to pay homage to specialized craftspeople and welcomes the opportunity for further discussion with local Indian artisan communities.” The brand also expressed a desire for dialogue and potential collaboration. 

What This Means for Indian Artisans

This incident shines a spotlight on India’s traditional crafts, which global brands often use without proper acknowledgment. While it's a point of pride to see Kolhapuris on an international runway, it's equally vital to ensure credit and collaboration.
