Holi 2024: History and Meaning Holi is a joyous festival that marks the victory of good over evil and celebrates the divine love between Lord Krishna and Radha. It's also a time to welcome the arrival of spring and bid farewell to winter. According to Hindu legends, Lord Krishna, with his dark complexion, was concerned about whether Radha, who was fair-skinned, would accept him. Seeking advice, Krishna's mother, Yashoda, playfully suggested he color Radha's face with gulal, a colored powder, to bridge their differences. Following her advice, Krishna playfully smeared Radha's face with colors, and this playful act became the origin of the Holi celebration.

Another tale linked with Holi is the legend of King Hiranyakashipu, his son Prahalad, a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu, and his aunt Holika, a demon. In this ancient myth, Hiranyakashipu received a boon that made him immune to harm from both humans and animals, leading him to demand worship from all. However, when his son Prahalad continued to worship Lord Vishnu, angering Hiranyakashipu, he asked his sister Holika to sit on a pyre with Prahalad in her lap, covered by a protective cloak.

The plan was for Prahalad to burn while Holika remained unharmed due to her boon. Yet, as Prahalad prayed to Lord Vishnu for protection, the divine intervened. The cloak flew from Holika to Prahalad, shielding him from the fire, while Holika perished. This event, known as Holika Dahan, is observed the day before Holi, symbolizing the victory of good over evil.
