New rules for getting an Indian driver's license will start on June 1, 2024, set by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
Here are the main changes:
- From June 1, 2024, you can take driving tests at private driving schools instead of government RTOs. These schools can now conduct tests and issue eligibility certificates.
- New rules will tighten car emission standards and phase out nearly 900,000 government cars to reduce pollution.
- Speeding fines will remain between ₹1000 and ₹2000. Minors caught driving will face a ₹25,000 fine, won't be able to get a license until they turn 25, and the vehicle owner's registration will be cancelled.
- The Ministry has made the paperwork for a new license simpler. The required documents depend on the type of vehicle (two-wheeler or four-wheeler), reducing the need for physical checks at RTOs.
Rules for Private Driving Schools
- Land Requirements: Driving schools must have at least 1 acre of land (2 acres for four-wheeler training).
- Testing Facilities: Schools must provide students with access to proper testing facilities.
- Trainers must have a high school education (or equivalent).
- At least 5 years of driving experience.
- Knowledge of biometrics and information technology systems.
- Light Motor Vehicles (LMV): 29 hours over 4 weeks (21 hours of hands-on instruction and 8 hours of theory).
- Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMV): 39 hours over 6 weeks (31 hours of practical training and 8 hours of theory).
These rules ensure that new drivers get a high-quality education and preparation at private training schools.
Application Process
- The application process remains mostly the same.
- Application fees vary depending on the type of license.
- To get your license approved, you must visit the RTO to submit documents and demonstrate your driving skills.
